The World Wide Web offers us, as genealogists, a vast number of resources. As responsible researchers, it is up to each of us to insure that the information we are using is of good quality. I’m sure that you have seen “Sally Sue Doe” listed as “Danny Doe’s daughter on one site while another declares her as “Thomas Doe’s” daughter, with “Danny” as her uncle.
I have found that not all researchers are willing to listen to reasoning as to why there is a difference in your findings from theirs Not all are willing to share their sources either. Could this be because they weren’t well documented in the first place? . “If I put it there I must have had a reason.” And that’s all they need. Well, I need more than that.
My point is, there is indeed a vast amount of info for us to dive into on the Web. But we have to make sure that the info we get is valid. Including as fact something that can’t/hasn’t been proven in your research can lead many others astray in their efforts. State you why you believe something, how your conclusion was drawn and provide as much documentation as you can to back it up. Doing it right the first time will save you much time and angst in the future. Trust me, I know. |
